Myofascial Energetic Release
Satyarthi, You are one of the creators of Rebalancing and you have been teaching it for more than 30 years. In the upcoming training at the Humaniversity you are introducing a new concept. Please tell us about it.
In this training we will focus on healing body pain. I've been doing bodywork for 39 years and over that time, one thing I've got really good at is working with pain. One common complaint is lower back pain but we also work with neck, hip and knee pain, as well as headaches.
I work with the understanding that the pain comes from muscle and fascial contraction, which is different from what most of us believe. When we get pain in our lower back or neck we believe it's caused by a disc problem because this is the diagnosis given by the medical world. By now, this has become the collective belief.
In the last 30 years back pain has become an epidemic. According to my understanding this pain most often originates in the mind. By denying and repressing our feelings, we store them in our bodies in the fordm of contraction and tension. Eventually they manifest as physical pain. Rather than feeling emotional pain, like fear or anger, we feel the pain in our lower back. At work it's acceptable for us to say "I have back pain" but we don't share with our colleagues in the office that we are feeling anxious and lonely or that actually, we don't know what to do with our life.
How do you help people to heal from this condition?
Satyarthi: A big part of the healing process is to understand the emotional dynamics behind the tension. As soon as you understand what is going on, you realize you are not physically injured and you see a way out of the situation. Most people think they're injured and they relate it to some accident they had or wrong movement they made. In my understanding, more than 90% of cases the pain is caused by what we call "Tension Myosis Syndrome (TMS)". From the viewpoint of Tension Myosis Syndrome it is just a contraction - a certain level of contraction in a muscle and the connective tissue - that creates the pain.
With a mild contraction, we start to feel a sore neck or sore shoulder. Usually we ignore it, or try to get rid of it by taking a hot bath. At this point the pain is not so bad that it would stop us from doing anything. With a stronger contraction in the muscle, the small vessels bringing blood and oxygen to the muscle cells are compressed. When this happens the muscle is in a chronic state of contraction and depleted from blood and oxygen. The muscle and connective tissue are over-worked and under-fed.
The situation gets worse when our emotions get triggered. We get stressed, angry, lonely or afraid and the muscle and tissue tighten up even more. With increased tension and decreased blood circulation and oxygen, the pain gets even stronger.
So what exactly are you teaching in your training?
The first thing I teach is how to release the spasm in the muscle, the fascia and the nerve. The miracle is that through deep bodywork it can be released very quickly and the symptoms improve immediately.
After that I get people to understand what causes the pain. Once they understand that pain is contraction of muscle and connective tissue caused by emotional repression, more than half of the healing is done.
It's not always necessary to have a deep emotional release to get out of physical pain. In fact, people who go through lots of emotional releases in groups and in therapies often still have back or neck pain. They're not repressing their feelings but they still have the pain because they haven't made the connection with the body. In this training we emphasize this connection. A work book and a manual are included in the course material.
During the last training here at the Humaniversity, I invited people with pain syndromes to come to the sessions. You could see that many people got better very fast. If you look at the usual approach by medical professionals, you find that many patients are told to have an operation because a disc is herniated – but then, after the operation, the pain often persists. The way I am combining the psychosomatic understanding and the deep bodywork makes this training very unique. I teach a very powerful and effective way to release pain permanently.
What other techniques and tools do you teach?
One important tool of diagnosis is body reading: How does one part of the body relate to another, what does the position of the feet tell us about grounding, where is the tension located and where does it come from? We look at movement and breath patterns and how it all relates to emotional blocks.
We also work with the five character types developed by Wilhelm Reich. We look at how the body accumulates and holds the patterns of the mind and our emotions. Our bodies literally tell our life history!
Assisted stretches and joint release are also part of the curriculum. They are both beautiful techniques complementing the deep tissue work.
Who is this training for?
The training is suitable for people interested in becoming bodyworkers as well as for people who are in pain and want to become pain-free through learning about the cause of pain and how to heal it. You also learn how to work effectively with other people's pain and repressed emotions.
Our way of deep bodywork which releases the spasms is a great thing to learn for bodyworkers, for massage therapists or for anybody who wants to know more about the body-mind-emotion relationship.
Can you join this training if you have no previous experience in bodywork?
Yes. You can start right from the beginning and learn how to effectively work with people's pain and body structure. You will learn how to lengthen, widen and create more space and depth in the body as well as to create a more integrated and balanced body structure, allowing the body to function in a much more healthy way. The training is suitable for beginners as well as people who already are bodyworkers.
